Watershed and Climate Science Training and Development for Educators
As an important part of its commitment to environmental education, Salem Sound Coastwatch offers a variety of professional development opportunities for teachers. We give educators the tools they need to bring scientific investigations that are climate-relevant into their classrooms. We illustrate local impacts and actions in response to climate change in our coastal communities.
Summer Teacher Institute
During the summer session, we take a deep dive into watershed and climate science, building your knowledge and confidence. You prepare to incorporate climate change teaching into your content and grade level. Climate solutions will come from understanding the historical, social, and environmental context that drives the climate system. Past Institute participants have found multiple connections to their social studies, math, and ELA teaching, as well as science.
Through outdoor field experiences, you build your skills, collect relevant data, and develop your own inquiry. This prepares you to guide your students in developing their own questions and investigations. Student-driven learning leads to stewardship and civic engagement in the school and community.
Collaboration with the Wade Institute
Salem Sound Coastwatch collaborates with the Wade Institute for Science during the academic year to offer place-based climate science classes. These intensive programs are typically offered at our office in Salem, MA.
Responding to Your Needs

I’m hopeful for the Salem Sound watershed because...
"…SSCW teaches me how to turn the youngest members of our community into environmental rock stars!”
Beth White, North Shore Educator
"I am a 19-year science teacher. In teaching it is so easy to fall into patterns that become routine. The School to Sea Teacher Institute has changed all of that! It has reinvigorated my excitement for teaching science. It has made me want to learn it all again and I am truly excited at what next year has to offer with this newfound learning of our ocean, our world, and how we as stewards can change it. Thank you Salem Sound Coastwatch for such an amazing experience!"
